What is 310 stainless steel? 310 stainless steel is a medium carbon austenitic stainless steel perfectly suitable for high temperature applications. Alloy 310 is an austenitic stainless steel that has both good ductility and weldability in high temperature properties
310 stainless steel grades have higher content of chromium and nickel which makes them highly resistant to oxidation and corrosion. Grade 310 stainless steel is a lower carbon version which is less prone to embrittlement and sensitisation in service. This SS 310 chemical composition with high chromium and medium nickel content make it capable of applications in reducing sulphur atmospheres containing H2S.
310 stainless steel or 310S is an austenitic stainless steel alloy with heat resistance and with excellent resistance to oxidation under mid-level cyclic environments through 2000°F. The factor that SS 310 chemical composition has high chromium and nickel contents provide it comparable corrosion resistance, better resistance to oxidation and the retention of a larger fraction of room temperature ability than the common austenitic alloys like Type 304.

SS 310 Workability
SS 310 stainless steel or UNS 31000 with its high chromium and medium nickel contents has good resistance to sulfidation and other types of hot corrosion. 310 stainless steel is popularly used in moderately carburizing environments such as encountered in petrochemical applications. 310 grade stainless steel is non-magnetic in the annealed and cold working conditions and is resistant to corrosion similar to type 304/304L.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Grades 310/310S can be fabricated as well as forged in the temperature range of 975°C – 1175°C; a good example of this is a 310 stainless steel sheet. Heavy work is carried out down to 1050°C and it’s lightly finished to the bottom of the range. After forging, its recommended for annealing to relieve all stresses from the forging process.
Machinability
SS 310 alloy is ready to cold formed by standard equipment and methods. Machinability of Grades 310/310S are similar to the type 304. Work hardening can be a mild risk and it is normal to remove the work hardened layer by using slow speeds and heavy cuts, with sharp tools and good lubrication. Powerful machines and heavy, ridgid tools are used.

Alloy 310 is also used in cryogenic applications due to low magnetic permeability and toughness down to -450°F (-268°C). When heated between 1202°F – 1742°F (650°C – 950°C) the alloy can be found with sigma phase precipitation. An annealing treatment with solution at 2012°F – 2102°F (1100°C – 1150°C) will restore its toughness in some amount.

310 grade stainless steel is a high temperature chromium nickel austenitic stainless steel with high creep strength that resists oxidation at temperatures up to 2000 ̊F in dry air. 310 stainless steel forms a tireless scale when operated in high temperature and is resistant to spalling and performs better than type 309 in thermal cycling environments.
310 stainless steel properties
One of the best 310 stainless steel properties is that it is resistant to oxidation in intermittent service in environments up to 1035°C and 1050°C in temperatures in continuous service. These grades are also resistant to oxidation, carburisation and sulphidation. Alloy 310 is also recommended to be used in slightly nitriding, oxidizing, cementing and thermal cycling applications, even if the maximum working temperature has to be reduced.
